Cystic and alveolar echinococcosis: large-scale studies and their impact on public health
The zoonotic tapeworms belonging to the genus Echinococcus encompasses multiple species and genotypes, two of which represent a relevant global public health issue: Echinococcus multilocularis causing ‘alveolar echinococcosis’ (AE), and Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato causing ‘cystic echinococcosis’ (CE). In this Symposium we will discuss the importance of large-scale, multi-centre and One Health studies on different aspects of AE and CE, and their impact on public health. Strategies for detection and control of AE and CE will be also discussed providing perspectives in the field of molecular diagnosis and translation of scientific investigations on health policies in the medical and veterinary sectors.
